[TechAssist] Re: Sony SLV686 VCR Play problems

In checking the signals to and from the micro for the capstan, it started
playing back normal and I could stop and start the play mode which I couldn't
do before. I ran it in play for about 5 min. Which I couldn't do before. So I
am not sure what exactly is going on. I have another Sony that uses the same
MD49 board that works, and am comparing voltages and signals. The main board is
different, so am limited there. This is spooky.

The capstan drive voltage is much lower in play/rec than in other modes, so
if the rotor is rubbing it might stall out just in play/rec. If you take the
belt off and turn the flywheel by hand you might feel the rubbing. But the
proof is to remove the motor and look at the air gap between rotor and
stator. Also if you pull the rotor you can see the abrasion marks on the
coils from the rubbing. I recall that when that was a big problem sometimes
the rubbing did not happen until the vcr had been running for 30 minutes or
so. We used to use a center punch to put a dimple in the bearing cap to
increase the air gap.

would be evident in all modes that the capstan is running in. The capstan
runs during load and unload as well. Play mode is the mode that it doesn't
run in.
