[TechAssist] Sony SLV686 VCR Play problems

This unit will not go into play mode most of the time. It will load then shut
down most of the time. It will FF/Rew normally most of time. It will Rec, then
after Rew, it will play sometimes.
It will eject most of the time. The capstan does not run when it shuts down.
Ocassionally the capstan will start but does not continue. The PG & FG pulses
out of the drum are normal and the drum runs when tape is inserted. I have
replaced the cam gear and the idler gear to the motor because of damaged teeth.
I have cleaned the mode switch twice. The switch is NLA. I have checked the
timing upper and lower several times. Doesn't seem to be a capstan problem.
What am I overlooking? One other thing, the automatic tracking words flash
rapidly whether it plays or not.
