One other thing I almost forgot.
You might try playing around with the disc table height.
That has helped in the past with similar situations to yours.

Only other thing I can think of is springs under the rubber bumpers in the
sub chassis are allowing the chassis to touch against the base of the
housing.. On occasion I have had to re-tension the springs.
BTW, How's the harness from the laser to the pcb???
Your symptom would suggest focus/offset adj. but you've already done that.

Absolutely ! I always change the spindle motor when I change the laser,
learnt the hard way on that one. Usually the spindle motor develops "wow" .
Seeing as 6 audio tracks on a CD only occupy the width of a human hair, it
doesn't take much lateral drift to make the laser mis-track. I have tried to
see if I can make the shaft of these motors wiggle side to side after I take
em out, but the play is so small you can't tell. You can tell though because
your player doesn't skip anymore.
