Ed, I recently did a Sharp VCR, model VC-H992U. The problem was not
exactly the same as yours but I thought I'd mention it in case it solves
yours also.
This VCR, when cue and review was used during play, would growl and then
shut off, plus eject would work in this state. I had to unplug the VCR
for a while to get it to reset itself.
The solution was the tiny nylon drive coupler on the loading motor shaft
had split, causing the motor shaft to just spin when the mechanism was
under a lot of torque. I roughed up the motor shaft a bit and used JB
Weld to fasten the nylon drive coupler permanenty onto the shaft. The
unit belongs to a relative, so I won't worry if the weld job doesn't
hold, I'll order them a new motor assembly.
