Rick,

You have identified the biggest problem in fixing high-frequency
rattles--hearing them so you can both find the source, AND know the noise
has been removed.  Some tech use a stethoscope, some use a long
screwdriver held to one ear, and some make a cone out of paper--like a
megaphone in reverse.  I have done the second and the third, but my
favorite is to invite the young, cute secretary from next door to lend an
ear.

I have found clear RTV (silicone rubber) to work the best in silencing
noisy coils and transformers.  Sometimes, I remove them and place several
light coats of clear polyeurothane (sp?).  Once dry, coat with RTV.

Works for me.  The young woman next door says I do good work.
