Sorry, I thought he was talking about a TV. Didn't realize it was a VCR
before I posted.
This brings to point that it should be stated in the subject line, what
type of equipment is being worked on.

My first reply:
I recently repaired one similar and I was told that if the diode was
left out, the output could shoot up toward 250V, so I didn't want to
operate it without the diode.
