Ed,
It's really easy for the record safety switch in those units to get mangled and
break
contact somewhere below their normal point. And it's not easy to see that
damage in-unit.
Try removing the carriage and then removing the switch for inspection.

Have a problem on this unit after repairing numerous mechanical
problems, belts etc.
When tape is inserted with Safety tab in place, will
automatically go to the play mode. Can not get it into the Record Mode.
I have checked the Safety switch on the basket, and it is working
properly. But it's acting as though it's not. Same symptoms.
Any ideas, anyone?
