David, Check the back tension. It's probably not the problem though. Try adding a little back tension while playing a tape by pushing the back tension arm a little to the left. If the picture clears up. The heads are bad. Picture is distorted with white blocks that streak throughout the picture (except on the very top and bottom), not like bad tracking or misaligned guide posts. Cleaned the video head (twice) but this made no difference. I've seen this before but can't remember what it was. The picture is relatively clear above and below the distorted area.
