Mark,
You are better off leaving the pins alone, rather than shorting them together.
I have received several RCA's that were missing the thermistor, but during 
initial
test, never knew it.
I guess in time, you would  see the misconvergence, but shorting them
together???????????
Seems like you may be getting a lot of this shops business, in time.
