Peter, Your first problem, not taking the tape, is a timing problem. Remove the loader, manually operate the mode motor until the timing marks line up, and reinstall the carriage. The second problem is a bad video IC. Don't remember the location number, but it's a 40-pin circuit on the left rear of the VCR chassis. Has a crystal on top. Panasonic number is VCRS0167A. Cost is about $40 from Tritronics. It has s/m caps that leak and ruin the board, like the Sony sound ckt SBX1637. Have fixed a very few, but better to replace.
