Jim,
You are right....the rotating assy is gear driven and shouldnt be floating
around as such. I dont have exactly that service manual for that model but
have similar models and will scan the assy if you post your email address or
send it directly to me.

Glenn, thanks for the reply but there is no white flexible harness that I
can find, the only two connections to this rotating assy are the brown or
gold flex cables, one to the laser assy and one to the main board. We did
replace the one to the main board. I think I have determined that something
is broken, I found a piece of black plastic in the unit but have not found
where it came from. Also the assembly that flips the laser p/u assy from
side A to side B is free to move around, doesn't lock in place at all. That
does not seem right. Any chance you may have an exploded view of this
section you could fax, or a PDF that you could email?

Jim,
check the flexible harness that connects the laser P/U to the main PCB. It
should be white in colour and they are a problem for intermittent play etc.

Hi techs, I hope someone is experienced on these units and may know what to
try. The unit will play through both sides of a laser disk a couple of times
then it locks up and won't play or open, When LD or CD open/close is pressed
the leds in the buttons flash. The laser pickup assy is not fully home and
after letting the unit sit awhile then moving the pickup assy by hand and
turning power on it will then work ok until the next time it locks up. The
switch on back of the pickup assy has been replaced. Any help or suggestions
will be welcome.
