Shaun, It is an avalanche diode, one time use and strictly for damage control. This one is rated at 180VDC approx. If there is an overvoltage of the 130 volt line it will short to ground loading the B+ line and forcing the SMPS IC to run at a much slower switching rate and thus effectively preventing any secondary power from developing. The SMPS IC has a 330VDC raw input using a 1/2 wave voltage doubler. If this IC were to short and pass 330VDC into the sweep circuit, there will be several blown components. Failure of the diode can be caused by line surges at the AC input without damaging anything else.
