I thought I would add what I've learned about Rechargeable batteries.
There are 4 types I know of:

Nickel-Cadmium (NiCD)
-Was standard for portable computers until 1992
-NiCD batteries have been replaced by NiMH and Li-ion
-Has a Memory effect
-Less energy by weight
-Uses nickel hydroxide and cadmium electrodes with potassium hydroxide
as the electrolyte

Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH)
-Introduced in 1990
-Rapidly took market away from NiCD in portable computers
-Still has small Memory effect
-Different from NiCD only by their negative electrode which is made of a
metal alloy capable of storing a large amount of electrons
-Metal hydride is produced as the charging product
-Energy by weight is almost 50% greater than NiCD

Lithium-Ion (Li-ion)
-Very good energy to weight ratio
-Found in high end laptop computers and cellular phones
-Took market from NiMH from portable computers
-Has very little if no Memory effect at all
-Made from layered sheets of aluminum foil coated with cobalt oxide,
which acts as the cathode with the anode made from a thin copper sheet
coated with carbon materials. The thin film cathode and anode are
separated by a sheet of plastic, rolled up together in a spiral and
immersed in a liquid electrolyte medium of Lithium.
-These batteries produce the same energy as NiMH batteries but are 40%
smaller, half the weight, and are better for the environment because
they don't contain toxic materials such as cadmium or mercury.
-Currently more expensive than a comparable NiMH battery.

Lithium-ion Polymer (Li-ion Polymer)
-Sometimes misleadingly called Lithium Polymer. True pure Lithium
Polymer batteries won't be out till about 2005.
-Check this site for Pros/Cons of Li-Ion Polymer and how it compares to
Li-ion and (pure) Lithium Polymer batteries:

Hope this helps.

Someone mentioned some time ago about "zapping" ni-cad
batteries to exrend their life. Exactly what does "zapping"
consist of? These things are too expensive to replace every 6
months.
