Hi Phillip,

Go to Run (Start > Run) and type: chkdsk /f (and press Enter).
This will check the disk for file errors and correct them.

Only helps sometimes but worth a try. If you installed XP SP2
and it's listed in Add/Remove Programs uninstall it, but ONLY
after you use System Restore to get back to a time AFTER SP2
was installed.

If the manufacturer of your laptop actually gave you a Real
MS XP CD (not their recovery CD) you could do a Repair
install. This would disable or remove the service pack and
with any luck fix all the problems.

You can't use a regular XP CD. That will make the system much
worse (or unbootable). If you had something like GoBack installed
it would all be over in minutes.
