Do they actually print Small Claim Court stuff in your paper? Your town
would have to be "pretty small" for that to happen. My concern is that if
you do give him a replacement, it opens up several cans of worms.

1 You admit guilt, you lost his unit.
2 You now become responsible for "quality of repair". This'll bite you
whether it's been repaired or not, since his stereo "actually did this or
that, before I took it over to that tech".
3 You cave in, you give him a "bogus" stereo unit (even if it's EXACTLY the
same model)
and suddenly he gets Bragging Rights. He's going to brag about his WIN,
he's going to use your name, and everyone he knows will hear about you.

This is not a situation where you lay down and let him use you as a doormat.
