Using an H.O.T with a built in damper on a set that does not require a
built in damper (because there is a separate damper diode on the P.C.B.
somewhere) will not have any adverse effects. Two damper diodes are
never a problem from all I've read and done. However, running the set with
*no* damper diode (by putting a damperless H.O.T. in place of a built-in
damper type) will result in *instant* destruction of the H.O.T. - usually
within the first scan pulse! Why? The flyback pulse produces a high
*reverse* voltage across the C-E junction of the H.O.T. It overcomes the
P.S. voltage by hundreds of volts. The only way to protect the H.O.T. from
this reverse voltage it to shunt it through the damper. Without the
damper, the H.O.T. bites it.
The biggest concern should be the *transistor's* specs if you're
substituting.
