The customer will have to bring the set in so I can do that test if he
doesn't find any magnetized metal objects close to the set.  I did check
the coil and it measured 18 ohms.

Maybe it had nothing to do with lightning, customers always want
something
to blame it on.  Check or replace the degauss thermistor and check for
bad
solder.  Monitor the degauss current or place a 60 watt light bulb
accross
the degauss plug (with the coil unplugged).  It should light brightly,
then
gradually go dim in a couple seconds. Also check the degauss coil for
continuity.  If it was a surge from lightning, The coil could be open.
Sonys draw a very large degauss current.
