Don't laugh, I have actually touched asbestos and lived to tell about it.
We did that a lot in high school physics class. We put a piece of asbestos 
on top of the Bunsen burners so the flame wouldn't break the beakers, using 
only our bare fingers. I even rubbed mercury onto a copper penny to make it 
look like a dime, using nothing but my bare fingers. When somebody dropped a 
mercury thermometer and broke it, we didn't run out of the school screaming. 
No sir, we ran toward the spot to collect the mercury for fun things, like 
the afore mentioned penny rubbing.

Now I know why I decided to become a TV repairman ----- brain damage.
