Countermeasure To Prevent Ic600 Failure

Symptoms: Dead, Found Ic600 Shorted And R640 Open.

Cause: Discharge From Crt To The Heat Sink Of Q600, Which Is Floating,
Causes An Arc To Ic600/Pin18. This Arc Can Short Out Ic600 And Opens R640
Located On Ic600/Pin 18.

Note: Q601 Might Also Fail

Resolution: To Prevent Failure Of Ic600 Please Add The Following:
Connect A 100k Resistor Between The Heat Sink Of Q600 And Ground.
Also Remount R628 In Ground Leg Of Vdr601 As Shown In Picture Attached.

This Countermeasure Was Placed Into Units Starting From  July 2002
Production.
This Countermeasure Should Be Done To All Sets Produced Before July 2002
Regardless Of Symptom.

Installed R651 From Q600 Heatsink To R628 Ground End As Per Sony Factory
Modification.
R651 (100k 1/4w) #124787091.

Dead.  Won't Power Up.  Relay Clicks.



Flyback Is A Common Failure On This Set. Look At The Pulse On The Collector
Of The Hor. Out. Trans. At Power Up. It Will Usually Show Ringing And
Distress.

Checked Pin 18 Of Ic600 And 0v. Found R640 Was Open. It'S Possible That
Ic600 Also Defective.
