Hi Jeff
I am not the Sony expert but your problem sounds like you are having power
supply problem.
Reg is breaking down under load.
Picture information draws more current so whenever the antenna is
disconnected less current is required then  at that stage it will not pulse.
I wish I could give you the fix. This is just a wild guess.
