My son Martin, worked for an outfit who repairs newspaper presses all over the world. While away, he stored his (If I remember correctly) Kawasaki 500 Dirt Bike in my shed. He purchased it new and sill owed $7000.00. Note, this bike is a dirt bike, and was not licensed for street use. It was insured. It was stolen out of my shed. On my property. I reported it to the local police. They told me that I could NOT report the bike stolen, only the owner of the bike can do that. Martin was working in Mexico, and I could not get a hold of him by cell phone. It took me two weeks to reach him. He called our local police to report that the bike was stolen. Now, with the police report number, we were able to prove to the insurance company that the bike was in fact stolen. Several weeks later we received an answer from the insurance company. They could NOT cover the loss due to the fact that the bike was secured behind lock and key on private property. If the bike would have been wrecked in an accident, on or off road, it would have been covered. Also if the bike would have been stolen on public lands, it would have been covered. Their suggestion was to contact his vehicular insurance. Martin's vehicular insurance informed us that since this bike was not licensed, nor was it transported by a licensed vehicle, they could do nothing. Their suggestion was to contact my homeowners insurance. My homeowners insurance could not cover the loss due to the fact that to much time has elapsed between the theft and the reporting and that it was a vehicle. About a year later the police called us to find out if we ever recovered the bike. My wife took the call. She is German/Irish. I found out this year that I could change my insurance on one vehicle to a personal policy much less expensive even if I regularly make house calls on it. If I haul TVs in it though it has to be a commercial policy. This is Progressive Insurance. The hitch; the commercial policy does not cover damages to the customer product. That is covered by my business property policy. In Alabama, probably everywhere, a homeowner's policy is the primary coverage for items that are normally in the home, no matter what or where happens to it. I even had a friend who was able to get re-imbursed (completely legitimately) by his home owner's for his mechanics tools that always stayed in his truck when they were stolen, and his vehicle policy said no. It never hurts to ask. I even found out my homeowners would clean the limbs from my yard after Hurricane Opal ( after I had already done it myself.) Jerrell Helms Helms Radio & TV 966 S. One time we had a customer break their set when they got in an automobile accident on the way home from our shop. The car insurance fixed the car but wouldn't pay for the TV but the homeowners insurance bought them a new set. I thought that was very strange. To All, Insurance does NOT cover what the home owner breaks. Now if he had broken his next door neighbors TV, it would be covered. If he had purchased it on a credit card, I **think** some credit card companies would have paid for a new set. BTW: My cost on the new parts was over 5K on a set that costs less than 4K.
