Lotsa possibilities. First check the electrolytic on the capstan motor to
see if it is leaking and eating traces. Remove the reel belt and give the
motor a spin to see if the rotor is dragging on the stator. Check the
bearings for excessive side play. Could be that it needs a spacer washer or
new bearings.
If the motor is OK, run the vcr with a tapeless dummy to see if the capstan
motor runs at all or if it runs weakly. If it runs weakly could be that the
magnets have gotten weak and it just need another motor or that there is
insufficient power or drive signal. If it doesnt run at all, the loading may
not be completing or the mode switch may be malfuntioning. I would give the
switch a squirt of contact cleaner to see if it made any difference. The
mode switch is not available as a seperate part. You have to get the entire
loading gear/motor assembly, which cost about $15. This is a good deal as
the plastic gears tend to be worn out when the switch goes.
If it runs OK with the dummy cassette, the problem may be with the reel
block assembly, which can cause all sorts of reel brake and clutch problems.
This is also replaced as a unit. If you replace that you should also replace
the reel idler.
