"i " would refer to interlaced mode, the common format TV has used for 
years.. The scan lines are written from the top of screen to the bottom, 
going from left to right, but skips a line each pass, then the next 
frame it goes back and fills in the odd ones. like:
line# 1,3,5,7,9... then 2,4,6,8,10... Thats interlaced, or "i".
Progressive, as it implies would write the scan lines like:
 line# 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,... in progression.
