David,
Check all the caps. I remember a 1µf cap that would be dried out. I've never
tried a polar cap in place of
the non-polar.
Replace the 43v and 18v zener...make sure you use 1 watt
Check all those small glass diodes, if any give you a low ohm reading, lift one
lead and check
again..these have been known to be leaky..even on the primary side.
You may have damaged Q1 and/or Q2. again.
I hope you have an ESR meter...if not, than I suggest replacing all the caps on
the secondary. Rarely I
have seen the 200v cap on the primary bad. There is a smaller cap on the
primary that dries out, also.
If you still have problems, I may have a working supply here, but I would need
the numbers off the board.

Because I wasn't aware of the zener's value, someone told me it was a
33V device, looking at the original shorted part closer revealed the
markings "43". I intend to get the right value and go from there; I'll
let you know how I make out. Thanks for your input Jeff.

David,
I fail to understand why not do it right and use a 43v zener and go from
there..

Jeff,

I replaced ZD6 with a 33V zener, could this cause the problem I'm
experiencing, how voltage can this (33V) zener shunt to ground?

David,
Check Q1, Q2 again.
Then check the small signal diodes for a leaky one...you can measure
them in circuit, when you find one,
unsolder one leg to confirm.
Also, ESR all the caps.
That is a 43v also check ZD5 an 18v zener...
The marking should be on these, if you look closely.

This VCR was in for service a few weeks ago, SMPS was dead, replaced the
following:

Q1 - C4418
Q2 - ECG382
D02 - IN4148
C09 - 22uf/16v

Then the display was blinking when powered up, found ZD6 leaky, replaced
it with 33V/1W zener (I think this is supposed to be a 43V zener?),
anyway, ZD6 blows within a minute of VCR being powered up. What could be
causing this? What circuit(s) does this supply?

Thanks in advance,
