C129, a 470uF @ 200 volt capacitor in the P/S had a bad connection on the positive leg. This cap is right next to the flyback and 1 inch from the transformer that was making all the noise. I think I need new glasses as I don't know how I missed it the first time! This happened twice only. Then using a rubber hose as a stethoscope, I found that the noise was not coming from the coupling transformer, but was coming from another transformer in the P/S, the switching transformer. Could a transformer fail in this way? I am more suspicious of a faulty transistor or other component with a bad internal connection. Anyone seen this type of problem before? Thanks. Don't hold the steel part. (laughs).
