Ed,
I beg to differ.
I did find one universal remote that would get rid of the OSD, though I forget
which one it was, now.
It was either RCA, Magnavox, Jensen or Zenith, since these are the only ones I
have.
I did find a "universal Emerson" remote at Tritronics for $10.
P/N RM4900.
I haven't tried it, yet.

Nor sure about the Emerson, unless they are using a Magnasonic Chip. With
the Magnasonic, the OSD can not be extinguished until the autoprogramming is
done.
Usually goes to the Large Green CH Number..then goes to the smaller Red
Ch Number right in the middle of the screen. If this is the one that changes
from a Green (large) number to a Red (small) number..the only way to get rid
of it..is with the original Remote...which are about $56 ...your cost.
