Then why do they still place that worthless head cleaner sponge in these?

That brings up a thought....
Remember they use to have Dew Sensors on VCR's to prevent this problem  
of gulping the tapes when the Video Head used to "sweat".
Since the Chinese completely took over production of this product, they  
felt it was a useless circuit to have on VCR's, extra ...redundant  
components.
