My neighbor had over 2200 items on her computer.  I used adaware to get
rid of them.  Because it was only a 300 Mhz CPU, it took over an hour to
delete all the items.  Her computer runs noticeably faster now.

  Adware and spyware can slow a system down to a standstill. I have had 
customers bring in systems that would take a 1/2 hour to load windows.
Some times sypbot will pull off a 1000 ot more files.

Installed programs not running in background do nothing except use some 
disk space and removing would only help if your HD was almost full and 
was limited on size for swap files.
