Hi Ed,
I always clone my backup drive in DOS with either the DOS (fits on one
floppy) version of Norton Ghost or DriveClone. Both have been reliable
and extremely fast (about one GB per minute using EIDE cables).
If you want to save time and copy only the files which have changed
(and be able to select over which time period) then you may want to
use the Windows program SmartBackup 2.0 (NOT 1.6 - this is a
completely different program).
I have tried dozens of backup programs and this one is by far the
easiest to use. I use it just for backing up to CDRW (need to have
Nero InCD or Roxio DirectCD installed to automatically write to
CDRWs). InCD is free if you already have Nero Burning ROM.
If you backup just the changes to CDRW (easy and fast) you don't
have to hookup your backup drive as often. If the backup drive is
always powered up or left in the same building it isn't secure
against fire, theft or severe power surges. In other words you
may loose ALL your data. I plug mine in only when backing up.
