I know this is not a complete answer, but Compaq computers have
"very tight integration", as it's called. Some would say they do
that deliberately... the main reason many people stay away from
them and from Packard Bell.
They sometimes won't... *ahem*... accept upgrades very well and
this model may not accept an 80GB HDD.
I would suggest the Usenet newsgroups. You can search with terms
such as Compaq, 7400, upgrade, etc. at http://groups.google.com.
