Paul, go to the Windows 98 control panel and create a startup disk, or
boot disk, whatever they call it. When you boot from this disk it will
come up with three options, two of thoes options will load generic dos
cd rom drivers which work with any cd rom drive. If you can read a cd
from the dos prompt after booting from this disk then your hardware,
bios, etc are probably all ok and you just need to get a copy of the
original install disk for the cd rom drive to reinstall in windows. If
you can ID the drive you may be able to locate downloadable drivers from
a web site. If you know how you can create and/or edit a config.sys file
and a autoexec.bat file and use the files from the startup disk so your
dos drivers will load at startup and then the cd drive may work in
windows without the windows drivers, this is how windows 95 worked as I
recall. A new cd rom drive will have it's own driver disk and that may
be you best solution. Also upgrading to Windows XP would probably fix
your problem, much better OS and should recognize all the hardware
properly when installed. Good luck.
