Restart, press F8 to get to a DOS menu. Choose C:\ Prompt/ Type 'scanreg' (w/o the quotes) Menu pops up, choose to scan, if says no errors, choose to view back ups. Choose a backup with a date before the problem started. Hopefully it takes and tells you to restart. The CD-ROM on your desktop is only a shortcut, which is why it was still there. You need to check the properties of your CD-ROM drive in My Computer, or control panel.
