straight ..
Just so it's clear, when I originally got all the paperwork, I
coordinated that with TRA HQ as they manage
the use of BLM Permits (and FAA Waivers at BRD). The dates for that
weekend we got because of our good relationship with UROC (it was already
claimed as a back-up). And yes, I filled out the paperwork for the waiver
and got it on the contingency that if we wouldn't use it, UROC would take
it. There's a lot
of bullshit circulating out there about how I "gave it away" - that
never happened - there is a list in priority order of who gets the airspace
and the one who was ahead of me, they gave me that airspace even though
they LOST THEIR LAUNCH SITE. It was the only right thing for me to give it
back. For those of you who have run a NOTAM+TFR at BRD, it is a LOT Of
work, it involves coordinating with 4 different ATC's and 2 branches of the
military, and that happens the week PRIOR to the launch. So I certainly
wouldn't have filled out that paperwork and put my name on it if we didn't
have the intention of going.
Next there is logistics ... let's look at our cleaning party I called
out for in May/June when we cancelled DA. I made a call out for volunteers,
and then we had our usual core group that does everything come and make
passes to get all of our gear tip-top, especially for OS. It's always the
same group of folks.
With all the newcomers we've had at our club in the last few years, it's
equally upsetting that there are no new faces or names or even people
shouting out to volunteer for help - even after the largest launch ever -
LDRS. That's really sad; our cleaning parties are a quick study, a ton of
fun, you get lots of rocket banter, a free lunch and it's a good chance to
meet everyone, learn all our gear, and step up to RSO/LCO, etc.
So there we are, with the lack of volunteers we have every year for our
OS launches, and the lack of volunteers for basic stuff like picking up
trash or setting up the range, it became double the effort to get
volunteers to drive the 400 miles up to BRD, and manage a launch and then
drive it all back. And then add on top of that asking them to conduct
operations like a HAZMAT team to clean up the gear after everyone.
Empathize with me here, isn't it understandable that this is too much? Case
in point,
everyone was scrambling to get their name on the list but I only had TWO
(2) people contact me to help!
In the future, I'd like to see people volunteer for help, don't ask
rhetorical questions like that, send me Gary or Aaron email and volunteer
to help - it doesn't matter what the task is, we can always take help.
We're the only club that doesn't charge yearly membership and we have the
lowest price for flying daily. I want to keep it that way, as it works
well -- people helping out because that is what they would do if they were
running the launch. I have to say, the colleges we have come to our launch,
they really help out a lot so we don't mind going the extra mile for them
as they are always there to get their hands dirty to help (instead of
flying their rocket and then getting into their car and driving off). That
really needs to be reversed for 2021, I want to see experienced fliers
offering the same. I am going to
have a system in place next year to prevent this from happening.
So think about that please, next time I make an announcement, shout out
- send me email and ask
how to help out (think about what you would do if you had to run a
launch). Don't wait the week before the launch to sign up on the documents
I post - be proactive. If we had more people like that, yes, we could
certainly still run a Hazmat team :-)
And I am not pissed at all, I am just bummed out like everyone else is
on this matter, but I do want to give people some visibility into what
happens to make a big successful launch where everyone is safe and has the
time of their lives!
So looking ahead, I'd like to train as many people as possible on LCO,
RSO, Spotting, Waiver processes, trailer hauling, setup/tear-down,
sanitation, etc. Please send me an email off-chat if you are
interested in helping out but don't complain and ask "why" if you
haven't done this first.

- If you've not flown at a TCC launch, your name is not on the sign-in
logbook (and therefore won't be on the waitlist).
- This launch is intended for TCC regulars; since we're the only club
that does not charge a yearly membership fee, we will go by the club
database which means if you signed up for the TCC Chat after I made
this announcement, you're not going to make the waitlist.
- If you have not been to a Blackrock Desert (BRD) Launch before you
should
pass on this launch (there will be minimal services and very few
people
should you get lost or need to find your way).
- If you are not a flyer, you should not be on the list.
- Limit for non-fliers, your significant other - no exceptions
(Rocket families are excluded).
- Limit for Junior-TRA/NAR - your mentor or ride to the launch site.
- People who are only coming for 1-day should NOT be on the list.
- People who plan to certify need to contact Gary Walker, Richard King
or myself ASAP
and let us know that this is your intention. If you plan to come out
on Friday for a cert flight and that's it, this is not your launch,

I’ll assume that TCC will be in the same or similar spot. You just drive to
the coordinates. The area is just so vast and there are no landmarks. Other
than the heat it was incredible. I’ve never seen so many stars.
It was even easy to see the Neowise comet with the naked eye. But I
was able to get some great shots with my camera too.

Helm launch - still not off the table, but no permission yet and not
looking good right now (the Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, San
Joaquin, Tulare and Stanislaus counties in California were
declared a hotspot last week with 11-18% infection rates versus 7.5%

Blackrock Desert launch - permission for 50 people (the Humbolt,
Pershing, and Washoe counties in Nevada currently open)
Place to camp - yes!
