LDRS leaders,
There are quite a few contest that you can do for the kids.
1. Highest altitude on A, B, C, D motors
2. Longest flight duration: A, B, C, D motors
3. Egg loft, highest and duration (egg must be raw and intact).
4. Closet to the pad: B, C, D - rockets need go greater than 200 feet in
altitude
5. Two stage, highest flight on 2 B’s , 2 C’s, 2 D’s
Just my $0.02 worth.

I know it’s a bit late to be thinking about this, but should there some kind of
event for kids or other non-HPR fliers? You can fly up to 8 D motors in a drag
race off the LPR pads, correct?

- H motors only.
Mass Monkey Loft
---------------
Boost a monkey skydiver (Crazy Tugs dog chew toy from Costco) in a large
diameter rocket using a low impulse motor
to 800-1000'. You can stuff a pretty good sized monkey in a 7.5” airframe. The
rocket and monkey come down on separate
parachutes. The award is for the most impressive Monkey recovery on a
parachute.
I will post this next week, then vendors can decide what they want to support
and how. I"m still also open to people
coming up with new ideas... Eric's is an original one for sure :-)
Thanks!

But in my defense, I interpreted what Chris wrote as saying the main bank of
HPR pads are usually at 500’, and it didn’t sound right to me. So I was on the
right track! Now I see he meant that if we keep under the complex L limit, we
would not have to move out to 500’ or further, and we could use the pads where
they usually are (at 300’).
Anyway…
If the pads are at 300’, then am I understanding it right that as long as all
of the motors in the monkey loft add up to 2,560 N-s or less, we are good to go
at the 300’ pads? And that’s good for any combo of H, I, J, or even K motors as
long as the total is less than 2,560 N-s?
If that’s right, then I think we should be good to go. Would we just bring a
list of all the motors in the drag race and a total of N-s when we check in for
pad assignments?

Standard HPR pads are at *300* feet, this lets you fly H-L without a second
rack for HPR.
At LDRS, we'll move L fliers to the away cell if it is busy, else we have to
shut down LPR.
Plan is to fly model rockets while loading HPR, or fly HPR while loading away.
So it will be a *deluxe* setup.
Aaron is reviewing the range setup and we should be able to post them soon with
more detail
then you will ever need, including precautions... special thanks to Steve and
Aaron for the attention
to detail.

Are the standard high power pads usually 500 feet? I would have guessed they
were usually closer than that, but if that’s the case, then we should be fine
for as many monkeys as we are likely to get. I was hoping to fly from the
standard HPR pads, and it looks doable. That’s one giant leap for monkey kind!

Eric,
This is how I interpret the rules.
If we fly 2 rockets we have to use the minimum safe distance for a complex
rocket with the total installed impulse. Two H, I or J motors would require
200'.
If we fly 3 or more rockets then the rules quoted from the LDRS37 website below
apply. Since we're talking about a H/I drag race the lesser of the three rules
should apply. We could fly15 H motored rockets or 7 I motored rockets and stay
below the complex L minimum of 500' where the standard high power pads are
usually located.
Chris
When three or more rockets (at least one high power) are launched
simultaneously, the minimum distance for all involved rockets shall be the
lesser of:
1. The complex distance for the total installed impulse. (refer to V.
Distance Tables)
2. 2000 ft (610 M)
3. 1.5 times the highest altitude expected to be achieved by any of the
rockets
Those flying vehicles in a drag race and wish to use Part (1) or Part (3) will
need to demonstrate expected vehicle performance otherwise all drag races will
be conducted at 2000′ (610M).

My idea is not really for a contest, unless someone has contest ideas. It’s
more of a spectacle.
I’m not sure if the idea is really right for LDRS or not. Everyone loves the
high-performance aspects of rocketry, and that may be more what the event is
about. But sometimes you just want to see a bunch of skydiving monkeys…
Let me know what you think. I bought a 3-pack of monkeys, so I have 2 to spare
if anyone wants one. (Although, one got a bit chewed by a dog we were
dog-sitting over the weekend.)

TCC is known for these insane high-thrust drag races, which are awesome.
Is anyone interested in also doing something more on the silly side? How about
a Mass Monkey Loft?
Last week at a LUNAR launch, I boosted a monkey skydiver in my Warlock, and it
was a lot of fun. You can stuff a pretty good sized monkey in a 7.5” airframe.
Mine was a Crazy Tugs dog chew toy from Costco, 3 for $13. He folds up small
but is 18” long when stretched out. I used a very small motor for this size
rocket to keep it low so you could watch the monkey start his jump — H295 to
only about 600’. For added drama, the monkey had a Chute Release so he could
get a 400’ free fall and deploy his chute at 200’. The crowd at the launch
seemed to really enjoy it.
Here is a video: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahx_sSuw7LA>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahx_sSuw7LA ;
Is anyone up for a drag race with monkey payload? If you have a Warlock or
Doorknob or any other large diameter rocket, this chew toy is a great fit and
easy to set up. Personally, I think the super low flight was funny in its own
way too, but that and the chute release could be up to the choice of each
individual monkey. It’s mostly about seeing the parachuting monkeys, so if we
could do the drag race on the closest bank of HPR pads, it would be best. If we
could get a few people interested in this, I think it could be more fun than a
barrel of monkeys!
Any interest in a Mass Monkey Loft?

better
deal then the Nike Apache kit (and we will talk about Nikes after that).
Anyhow, please come back in one hour - this will be a limited run kit and
only 100 available, one of the reasons we can do this is because of Nike Apache.
Hint - it's named after Mark Canepa's range vehicle :-)
