We rolled from Houston about 9:15 am Saturday morning. We headed out
the Hardy toll road to I45 to Conroe, where we hooked up with U.S. 75.
The first thing I noticed when we got on the freeway was how SLOW Homer
was going. I had checked the timing when I changed the oil. It was at
about 38 degrees at 3000 rpm! Well I wonder why he is running a little
HOT. So when I found that I was all thrilled that I had cured my heat
problem. Set the timing back to 28 degrees where I was thinking it
needed to be. Well 28 degrees worked great for the oil temp, never
flickered the "berg dipstick", the problem was that on flat ground,
foot on the floor, flat out was about 60 mph on the GPS, and taking a
BIG hit on the hills. I gave some thought to pulling over somewhere
along the way and adjusting the timing a little. I guess I am just to
chicken to take a chance, or to lazy to worry about it. We just rolled
on up 75 at about 50 or 55 and enjoyed the beautiful weather and pretty
flowers . We got to the Waxahachie Creek Park campground first at about
2:30 after a stop at the Pilot in Huntsville for gas and Cooper Farms
in Fairfield for fruit. We scouted around the campground looking for
the perfect spots long enough to let someone else get the ones we
decided on. We decided on a nice spot and set up the new tent. The tent
is pretty cool. We are just not accustomed to a tent without a floor.
It came with a ground cover but I think we need to get a bigger tarp
and put that down first. Larry showed up just as we finished jacking
with the tent, we almost finished, I had a hard time not messing with
it the whole time we were there. We visited with larry for a while. He
filled us in on the list of excuses some of you were using for not
camping with us. Steve and Sharron showed up a short time later, right
after the biker gang set up camp RIGHT across from our campsites. We
visited and cooked and listened to the bible study from a campsite
across the way. We slept in the bus with Thor, he woke me up a couple
times wanting to get out and get in the tent. When we got up in the
morning we discovered that he was wanting out because something ate all
his dog food we left out in the tent. He was in such a hurry to get out
of the bus that he ripped the tent when he pushed the door open. It was
just a rip about 3 inches long, but it sounded like it was getting torn
to pieces. I came out of the tent a Steve was yelling "good morning" at
the top of his lungs. They were all over by Larry's bus making
breakfast. I was thinking Steve had lost his mind, he was making so
much noise. When I got over there he told me that the biker gang had
kept their fire going and stayed up real late making much noise. We had
not heard a thing all night. That fan we camp with makes it so nice and
quiet. (thanks denis for the tip) Larry fed us breakfast and instantly
they were ready to go to the show. We got back from the shower and they
were all packed up and ready to go. We did not want them to have to
wait for us, so they went ahead to the show. We packed up the tent and
the rest of our camping stuff. I adjusted the timing to 32 degrees
(making plenty of early morning noise for the bikers) We headed to the
show around 9:30 am. We had a good time at the show, got to see allot
of you. Got to watch some drag racing passes. Saw some of the HAC that
were not supposed to be there. We really enjoyed the show for the first
time, we have been to several before but the weather always seemed to
foul it up. We left the show early around 1:00 p.m.. Had a very
uneventful drive back down 75. When we had to get on the interstate a
couple times the traffic was crazy. With the timing set at 32 degrees
the performance was much better. I was thinking the oil temp was
running a little high till we saw the bank thermometer saying 90! We
got back to the house at 5:45 p.m. We had a GREAT time. Thanks to Steve
& Sharron for dinner at the campground AND lunch at the show! You guys
are great! Thanks to Larry for the great breakfast! Thanks to the rest
of you for reading all this!
