My good buddy (and mechanic) just opened a shop in Plano. It's on Plano Pkwy and Coit. He knows quite a bit about Vintage VW's (as he works on all 4 of mine). He is also Nissan, Honda, and Acura Certified. He is currently looking for more work. His Labor rate is $65/hr. He's honest and Knowelegable. That's why it costs so much to have an old vehicle restored if you have someone else do it and you pay them. It takes about 700+ man hours to do a reasonably decent resto on a bus that was a fairly decent candidate to start with. I have had people ask me what my restored Westy is worth. I tell them that I have approximately $7,000 in actual cost in it including the purchase price, AND 700 hours of labor @ $75 per hour shop rate, you calculate the numbers. You just do all of the little things one at a time and it eventually gets done. Go to bed at night and put yourself to sleep thinking about the next project you will do tomorrow. At some point you are finished. And speaking of shop rates: I don't know what is reasonable anymore. My friendly VW mechanical repair shop is now charging $80; my brand new Chevy PU had to have the power door lock mechanism replaced the other day and the Chevy dealer shop rate is $75; the closest VW dealer to me now gets $95. But I also know a good paint and body guy who owns his own shop and will work on old car restorations when the shop is slow and for this he tells me he tries to make $35 per hour. --- On Thu, 9/25/08, Denis Dodson <coocoo@xxxxxxx> wrote: From: Denis Dodson <coocoo@xxxxxxx> Subject: [tcb] Re: tcb emails??? To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Thursday, September 25, 2008, 9:39 AM We're old and busy. At least, I am old and busy. There are plenty of lurkers. OK. Here's a subject: I am still in the process of rehabbing this junkyard door to replace the destroyed driver's side. I have taken it down to shiny metal and ground out all the rust, inside and out, have sprayed primer, not liked the texture and stripped it and sprayed it again, and like it. Today, I may put real paint to all the parts. Then I can put all the rubber on and the glass in and have a decent door, which I have to hang and adjust to fit in it's rebuilt hole. I have had to rebuild all around the damaged area, bending, shaping and painting metal so that it will look, somewhat, like new if I ever finish. Oh, and I forgot that I still have to install all the mechanical door works. Is this why these things go for $15K and up if they are decent looking? Does everybody who really cleans and repairs every tiny corner go through all this? Do most people clean every corner? Sammie, was the Bakery bus this way? Ronnie, did Sparky and Crusty cause you this much grief? If I ever had to figure out in man-hours, materials and blood what Murray is worth, it would have to be in the $500K range and not a dollar less. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian Denning" <i_am_cool_fred@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, September 25, 2008 9:03 AM Subject: [tcb] tcb emails??? when i joined the tcb 3-4 years ago i used to get bombarded with emails all the time and loved it, seems as though lately we just don't get the emails we used to get. have we lost members or what? why is everyone so quiet now? _________________________________________________________________ Want to do more with Windows Live?
