Thanks for the input. I have checked the tank and it is still in good shape, I have been warned about implosion so I open the tank regularly. But of course this is not the solution. When I was purchasing parts earlier today I was told that the cap for my 67 bus didn't come stock as a venting cap. So I starting looking for a vent somewhere. No vent I can find. I have an early 67 so I don't think the previously mentioned stock vents apply. ----- Original Message ---- From: sammie smith <bugcollections@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, March 2, 2007 5:42:22 PM Subject: [tcb] gas tank venting Early busses and early bugs vent through the cap, or at least they are supposed to. Later bugs, post hump back tanks and through 67, have a vest hole with a hose running down and out of the trunk. Guess VW got tired of hearing all the ladies complain about gas fumes in the car since the tank was literally vented into the trunk. Well here is an interesting story: Had a friend in 66 who had a brand new bug; knew nothing about bugs; kept running out of gas and when he refilled it would only hold about 5 gallons; takes it back to the dealer and they remove the liner in the trunk to look at the fuel tank. Totally collapsed. The vent hose was kinked and the fuel pump was strong enough to not only keep pumping fuel in a vaccum but strong enough to collapse the fuel tank to 1/2 capacity. And I don't wanna here from the barndoor and bay window guys about how they vent. Read my prior disclaimer: Any tech notes I give on busses apply only to post barndoor and pre bay window busses. I gotta nuff to keep up with without hassling rich barn door guys and phat chicks. Sammie Hi Jeff, shirley hall here, a lurker of the tcb list. i read your post on the venting problem and it rang very familiar to my problem a few years back. my tank was old and i had it relined when I got my 65 back on the roak. my friend lost my original cap at gas station. i bought another cap. I didn't think twice. about a month later ran out of gas about 40 miles early (not a working guage). reached over the motor to find the tank "imploded" about 2-3 gallons worth. on advice of friends, took compressor and blew it back up. on the way to en early TTatP, stopped just before park to fill up the tank. gas is pouring out of bus. When I had blown the tank back up, it had cracked the walls of the tank. I would check your tank to see if it hasn't imploded. I just took the gasket out of the cap and it stays loose so it doesn't ruin another tank. i looked (not very hard I guess) for a vented cap and didn't find one. hope you can! hope to see you in nac Shirley Hall ____________________________________________________________________________________ Now that's room service!
