Early Semaphores had ribbed backs and the later ones were smooth.  The back 
being the part that is exposed when the semaphore is closed.  Surf the gallery 
on the Samba and you can probably find a picture of each.

  On semifores, was there anyting different on them from a year to year design? 
 Also,  the long line of numbers on the back, are those part numbers or do they 
relate to the vehicle they came from.  A  pair I was given are supposed to be 
from a 48 Beetle.
