Well, you know the old saying: "speed costs money, how fast do you want to 
go?"  
Could be changed to "horsepower costs money, how many do you want?"  And Will 
is 
correct: costs of VW engine components have freakin gone outta sight.

I have a well built (Cerrano) 1776 with a mild cam, a progressive weber and and 
electronic ignition in my '70 bus.

The bus cruises well up and down hills.  I'd love to stroke it, but not for $5K.
