<Barndoor>
Barndoors had 100mm gas caps with the puirdy VW logo. The caps are vented.

Subject: [tcb] gas tank venting

Early busses and early bugs vent through the cap, or at least they are supposed
to.  Later bugs, post hump back tanks and through 67, have a vest hole with a
hose running down and out of the trunk.  Guess VW got tired of hearing all the
ladies complain about gas fumes in the car since the tank was literally vented
into the trunk.  Well here is an interesting story:  Had a friend in 66 who had
a brand new bug; knew nothing about bugs; kept running out of gas and when he
refilled it would only hold about 5 gallons; takes it back to the dealer and
they remove the liner in the trunk to look at the fuel tank.  Totally
collapsed.  The vent hose was kinked and the fuel pump was strong enough to not
only keep pumping fuel in a vaccum but strong enough to collapse the fuel tank
to 1/2 capacity.  And I don't wanna here from the barndoor and bay window guys
about how they vent.  Read my prior disclaimer:  Any tech notes I give on
busses apply only to post barndoor and pre bay window busses.  I gotta nuff to
keep up with without hassling rich barn door guys and phat chicks.
