There are various vacuum advance distributors that VW used.  SOme were
all vacuum advance.  The size of the vacuum canister doesn't have much
to do with it's performance.. 

Check out an SVDA, I have put them now into 4 daily drivers and the
mileage has always improved as has the performance of the engine.

If you look on theSamba you'll see one come up for a lot less than
Aircooled or others sell them for as well.
