Check the idle cutoff solenoid. Physically remove it and watch it operate, don't just listen for the click.

Re-clean the carb with a good dip cleaner and blow out all passages with compressed air.

Check for proper fuel flow. If the pump isn't moving enough to the bowl then while accelerating the card is drawing th bowl level down then using what the pump is providing. When you let off and reduce vacuum there may not be enough gas in the bowl.

Check the float level (see flow note above).

Check for an open vacuum port. Vacuum may be too low at idle to quickly recover from high vacuum revving.

P.S. Accelerator pump sticking wouldn't matter on deceleration unless possibly the check ball is sticking and causing vacuum problems. For that use #2 above, re-clean, repeatedly.

ok, i just go through rebuilding the carb on a friends 66 beetle. it's a 34pict carb. carb is adjust to i think appropriate settings. why is it that when you give it gas and let off it falls on its face? accelerator pump is sticky is the only thing i can figure...how would i check that and how would i fix it? it's the new one from the kit that i put in.
