Maybe but...

Cracked exhaust valve can cause it.
A tight exhaust valve can cause it.
Too rich a mixture can cause it.

Most of the time I agree intake leak.

The mechanic has indicated that he has none though. This is where beer and a
lawn chair come in handy while a dozen old VW hands tell one guy what to do.

Have you sprayed carb cleaner around all of the intake manifold connections?

When did you last adjust your valves?

i think the carbeureator is loading up but i want to make sure. the bus if
you are trucking along and you let off the gas it will eventually backfire
not instantly but eventually. at first i thought exhaust leak so i replaced
my riser gaskets and checked all the bolts on the entire exhaust system this
past weekend and there is no sign of anything loose or any exhaust leaks.

here is what it does:

you mash the gas then let off and it dies when it's in normal...you start it
back up and it will idle fine you rev the engine and the rpms will go up
then you let off the gas and it just slowly dies.

this has started every since i put the j-tubes and merged header on it.

is it loading up or is it a jetting issue or do i have an exhaust leak
somewhere that i have missed?

oh i have also checked all vacuum leak possibilities. retightened the rubber
boots that hook up to the intake checked the bolts on the carbeurator etc.
