Yep, you need a couple of tranny overhauls.  I would contact Kelly Huffman at
the Bugstop in Arlington, Damon Harmon, or Jack Wenk at Black Gold who is now
getting his trannys from Damon.  As to the top speed of your 65 bus.  What
engine are you running?  If stock single port 1500 it should cruise at 60-65 if
it is running proper but is working pretty hard to hold a steady 65.  It should
have the big nut tranny (46mm axle nut).  check to see if someone might have
changed it to a small nut (36mm).  If you want to run anything up to a stock
1600 you probably should stay with stock gear ratios.  Drop a "free-way flyer"
in there, which most people think of as a 3.88 R&P, and you are going to be
sadly disappointed because you don't have enough engine to pull it in 4th with
that R&P. You will be in 3rd gear up every incline.  If your tranny is stock it
should have a 4.37 R&P.  With a really good running 1600 or 1641 you can get
away with changing
to a 4.12 R&P and cruise fairly easily at 65.  To drop down to the "freeway
flyer" 3.88 you need a lot more engine than that.  Now all that is assuming all
other gears in the tranny are stock and you have redux boxes with the 1.26
stock ratio for the 46mm axle nut.

I have a bone stock SO-42, 1966, with a bone stock original 1500 engine.  It
cruises easily at 55-60.  More than that is really pushing it.  Know some
people who have a 4.12 R&P with redux boxes running 1600 and 1641cc engines
that cruise fairly easily at 65.

IMHO if you want to cruise a stock suspension bus at greater than 65 all day
long then you need to go buy a new SUV and forget the bus.

Remember that the trip is 99% of the fun.

Hey Folks -

I got a "new" 65 bus a few weeks ago and it pops out of 4th gear alot. Also my
top (comfortable) speed is 55mph, I'm thinking about getting the tranny rebuilt
or buying a new freeway flyer.
Also my "new" 56 porsche speedster (71 bug chassis) pops out of reverse and
grinds, so I think I'm looking at 2 new or rebuilt transmissions....

Any suggestions on local DFW person to rebuild? (I used Tom Jenkins on my 67
bug and my 72 bus years ago - anyone have his contact info if he's still
around?)
Or where I should order one from?

Thanks,
