This sounds like more of a valve problem to me as well.  If it has to have
that much advance it's got a dead cylinder or two.  Do you have a
compression tester?  If so I'd run a compression test or barring that a
leak-down test to see if it's a valve problem.  Also, if a motor is badly
built or uses bad parts in the first 1000 miles is where you're going to see
the problems.
