I can tell you the inner bearings are NO FUN! Maybe with the right stuff to
press out the old one, but with regular tools, even an air?chisel thingy it's a
chore.

The drive shafts would have alreday been off when the vehicle was delivered
for repair, I took one off when the bearing went because I first thought
that it was the gear shift that had rattled into, then back out of, gear
while I was towing that caused what I saw/felt (when the bearing blew the
bus yanked my truck back did a "dip/sway" thing for a split second. Towing
it back to the office at 15mph I noticed no further problems.). If I have
to trailer it to a more distant location I'll probably put the drive shafts
back on so I can use the starter to put it on the car hauler.

There are no VW mechanics in this area. I know the guy is way high on his
price but there aren't many options. I figured 3 hours R&R on the engine
($180) including doing the complete clutch replacement (Type4, 5 bolt
flywheel, no heavy torque gland nut to deal with). He's quoting 5 hours. I
was also figuring 3 hours each side for the bearings for someone unfamiliar
with the vehicle, one again, he's quoting 5 per side.

I have all the parts. New disc, plate, pilot bearing, and throwout
bearing. Wheel bearings will be here in a day or two. I'm just tired of
throwing money at it because I can't get around to working on it myself.
