Subject: [tcb] Oil sender update. Actually, I'm just venting

Bottom line: two questions:

Is it electrical or mechanical?
Can I (and/or should I? okay, 3 questions) over-ride with a vdo gauge?

'86 to '91 vanagons have two oil senders: low (0.8) & high (1.9).

It is a "common" problem for buzzer and light to start going off on the high
DOPS (dynamic oil pressure sender), according to research*. Causes include low
oil, burnt oil, bad sender, a bad ground (the high is "closed" verses the low,
which is "opened"). And in my case, the wiring on the subie conversion
confalutes matters**.

I changed the low DOPS, changed the oil and of course, added the initial quart
and 1/3.
BTW: the low DOPS  light went out after the initial quart and 1/3 was added.
Now I'm stuck managing the high DOPS problem.

So, here's where Freedom stands:  in the friggin' driveway. ;)

Okay, more seriously, the light and buzzer still goes off at high rpms. It can
run for 10 minutes without anything but as soon as I get the rpms up, the
flashbacks begin. It's gotta be electrical, right?

Gall'darn, I wish I had done the conversion. At least I would know if that was
the starting point or not. "It is most likely, Grasshopper."

* Sorry but I've been running back and forth from the garage to two different
computers for research and failed to keep good logs. Ya'll have visited the
same websites at least once or twice. Some are subie conversion sites but many
are straight VW sites. Honest. Ps. this is why I did so poorly on reports in
college. Pss. I graduated magna cum laude. Pss. BFD.

** There are many options to overcome the problem:
 - A high DOPS can be installed on the subie block, which isn't the case with
Freedom
 - the DOPS can be removed from the tach and/or speedo
 - pin 1 can or might need disabled on the printed circuit board
 - pin 12 can be grounded
 - or the oxygen sensor wire can be replace with the lead from the high sender
Atleast that's what I gather. . .right or wrong.
