Oh my, do I feel stupid-i just did this (try holding Down the Off button on 
radio for 3seconds plus....) as a vanagon listmember suggested,  and it then 
completely shut off........wow, now I don't have to rewire everything! :-) 
super happy, but feel super stupid. 

Thanks everyone.......I guess it took 2wks for me to drain my own battery,

That could be true as well.
I would take your battery to your local shop and have it tested.
Batteries dont line to get drained down too low.
To remedy the backlit radio issue, you could put a toggle on the radio power 
line.  That would allow to turn it off completely but you would lose your radio 
presets and clock time.
