As peter suggests check the shifter retainer bolts, the coupler and the
bushings.
If the coupler is cracked it can cause all kinds of fun.

I had no gears and by wiggling the shifter I got 2nd gear. Now he's all fixed
and runs and shifts fine. The repair cost fifty cents. What was it?
