"VW busses break down all the time, but rarely strand you" I can't even guess how many times I have told people that. If you were in any other car, you would have been screwed. Yea Ronnie! Yea Sparky! ----- Original Message ----- From: Ronnie Hughes To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2007 5:49 PM Subject: [tcb] Little Miss "Sparky" Well, today turned out to be fun. I haven't started Sparky for a few weeks so I checked the oil, fired him up and drove to Wal-Mart. When I was coming out, I noticed a split in the muffler. Got home and checked it out and sure enough, the whole bottom seam was blown out. Called around and nobody had an EMPI muffler to replace it so I decided to just get a glass pack installed at a muffler shop over on I-45. Cruising down the service road, pushed in the clutch to make a turn and POP and clutch pedal hits the floor. I was in nuetral so I coasted through three lanes of traffic, honked at three kids on bikes to get out of the way, coasted past a Texas Highway Patrol car sitting in the gas staion parking and came to a stop. Crap! And just starting to rain. Crap! Don't have my cell phone. Crap! But, I do have an extra clutch cable and my tool box. I get started and decided that it was too wet and thought if I can get rolling, I can start Sparky up and drive down to the muffler shop and see if they will let me borrow a bay. So I put the transmission in 2nd gear and start cranking, jumps like hell, all of the people in the gas station start pointing at me, but starts and away I go. Down the I-45 service road in 2nd and finally shift to 3rd gear. Get to the muffler shop and there's some lady in a Ford SUV blocking the driveway and can't decide what to do. I can't slow down, so I pull into a parking lot and turn off the ignition before I start jerking too hard. Go old Bay Window technology, the steering wheel locks. Luckily, I get stopped with no damage done. The muffler shop let's me use their parking lot, but not a lift. Better than the gas station anyway. Get the tool box out, put on some coveralls and reach for my jack. Oh, that's right, it's sitting on the bench in my shop. After about 1 1/2 hours of breaking loose 20 -35 year old nuts & bolts, I get the new cable in, get me a Cherry Bomb installed and a little wet, but good as new. Could have been much worse. Really thankful the guy I bought my bus from had a spare clutch cable and throttle cable under the back seat. I'm ordering a spare right now.
